Signing up for Medicare
Below is a video detailing the process of signing up for Original Medicare Part A and Part B
If you find this process challenging or lack the necessary technology, you can schedule a phone appointment by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users can call 1-800-325-8). Please be aware that wait times may be lengthy.
Automatic Enrollment

You will be automatically enrolled in both Part A and Part B if:

-
You are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits when you turn 65.
-
You are under 65 and have been receiving Social Security disability benefits for 24 months.
-
You have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and are receiving disability benefits.
If you are automatically enrolled, your Medicare card will be mailed to you about three months before your 65th birthday or the 25th month of your disability benefits.
Manual Enrollment

If you are not automatically enrolled, you will need to sign up. The best time to do this is during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). This is a seven-month window that includes the three months before you turn 65, the month you turn 65, and the three months after.

You can sign up in one of three ways:

-
Online: The easiest and fastest way is to apply online through the Social Security website at www.ssa.gov.
-
By Phone: Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
-
In-Person: Visit your local Social Security office.
